Prostitutie in de Franse kunst 1850-1910

Prostitution was a favorite subject in the visual arts in the second half of the nineteenth century. Artists eagerly portrayed prostitution as an aspect of modern city life in Paris, painting women soliciting on the boulevards, wealthy courtesans in their drawing rooms and the decrepit prostitutes in the brothel. The theme was topical because of the numerous social discussions about the dangers of prostitution and the advantages and disadvantages of regulation. Lichte zeden shows what attracted artists to this tantalizing, but also complex and sensitive subject. The book shows a large number of imposing and famous masterpieces by artists such as Manet, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso and Van Gogh, supplemented with intriguing and curious objects such as a 19th-century police register with photos of convicted prostitutes. The book take the reader from the dance halls and cafes where women picked up their customers to the closed world of the brothels and the prison where illegal prostitutes and women with venereal diseases were locked up.
